NSSD-112 Board of Education Approves New Sherwood Associate Principal
In her upcoming role, Patience Bertana will succeed Kevin Saunders, who will step into the role of principal of Sherwood Elementary in July.
HIGHLAND PARK, IL — The North Shore School District 112 Board of Education approved Patience Bertana's appointment as the associate principal at Sherwood Elementary School on Tuesday night. She will begin in the new role on July 1, 2024.
Ms. Bertana brings a wealth of experience to the position. Since 2021, she has served as an innovation and instruction technology coordinator at West Northfield School District 31, showcasing her commitment to educational excellence and technological integration. Her journey in education extends over two decades, including a nine-year tenure as an instructional coach at Mundelein Elementary School District 75 and an eleven-year role as a dedicated teacher at Carl Sandburg Middle School. Ms. Bertana began her educational career as a special education teacher, a role that established her foundational approach to inclusive and effective teaching.

A lifelong learner, Ms. Bertana holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from Illinois State University. Her commitment to professional growth is further evidenced by her master's degrees in reading and literacy from Benedictine University, instructional technology from Northern Illinois University, and educational leadership from American College of Education.
In her upcoming role, Ms. Bertana will succeed Kevin Saunders, who will step into the role of principal of Sherwood on July 1, 2024. This transition follows the Board of Education's approval of Mr. Saunders and Rachel Filippi's new positions in February. Ms. Filippi will transition to the district office to serve as a student services coordinator, continuing her commitment to the district's success.
