Vigils Set For Victims Of Highland Park July 4 Parade Mass Shooting

A seventh person died from their wounds Tuesday, as the Highland Park community grieves a day after the Independence Day massacre.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Community members are coming together to grieve following mass shooting at Highland Park's Independence Day parade.

Seven people died and nearly 40 people were wounded after suffering gunshot wounds Monday morning, according to police and hospital officials.

Five were pronounced dead at the scene. One person died at the emergency room at Highland Park Hospital Monday, and another succumbed to their injuries Tuesday, authorities said.

Several local faith organizations have scheduled gatherings and vigils in response to the massacre, the state's deadliest in decades.

City officials also announced the cancelation of events planned in the city for the coming 10 including the next two Food Truck Thursdays, the Takeout Tuesday event planned for July 12 and the city's inaugural World Music Fest, which had been planned for July 16.

"The devastating attack at the City’s Fourth of July Parade was a horrific, heartbreaking incident for a close-knit community that values connections between neighbors and treasures opportunities to gather together," city officials said in a statement. "The City extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims."
