As part of this promotion, adopters determine the donation fee for the cat they select. For this “name your price adoption”, potential adopters follow the usual process of completing the HHS feline application and meeting with a staff adoption counselor prior to interacting with a cat. The adoption includes a microchip, ID tag and collar, vaccines, parasite treatment, carrier and health exam.

Currently there are more than ten adolescent felines available for adoption. The Thompson family from Elmhurst was one of the first to participate in this “Fall” in Love Special. They came to the shelter with a preference for a younger adult cat rather than a kitten. After meeting and interacting with Argentina, a 6 1/2 month old female Tortoiseshell cat, they decided she would make an ideal feline family member.

According to Assistant Shelter Manager, Samantha Cheatham, 4 to 7 month old felines are frequently overlooked. However there are several advantages to selecting an adolescent. These youngsters are playful, but without the frenetic activity typical of 8-week old kittens. They tend to be calmer and more cuddly, particularly since many were raised at HHS and are well-socialized by volunteers. Additionally, the personality of an adolescent has developed, giving adopters a more accurate indication of its traits and behaviors.

Among the adolescents currently in residence at HHS, several happen to be black cats. “Black cats seem to be better adjusted,” said Cheatham. “They are actually among the friendliest according to research, in part because of their genetic makeup”.
