HINSDALE, IL — Hinsdale Village President Greg Hart has been appointed as a practitioner in residence at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics for the winter quarter, bringing his experience in both local and county government to students, according to a news release.

The Practitioners in Residence program allows University of Chicago students to learn directly from experienced practitioners through workshops and one-on-one mentorship, offering practical insight into careers in government and public life, the release said.

Hart's appointment comes as part of the institute's growing focus on local government, where policy decisions most directly affect people.

"Local and county governments are where many of the most important decisions impacting daily life are made," Hart said in a statement. "I'm excited to work with students who are curious about public service and to share lessons learned from governing at multiple levels of government."

In a message, Hart told Patch that he would teach seminars on success and innovation in local government, given his role as village president and a former DuPage County Board member.

Obama adviser David Axelrod led the institute for years.

Former institute fellows include former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, and former Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, among others.

“In an increasingly complex political climate, students need to be equipped with critical thinking skills, intellectual curiosity and hands-on experience,” John Kirby, director of the Institute of Politics, said in a statement.

In county government, Hart worked on issues including public safety, public health, regional collaboration, and economic development.

A graduate of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Hart combines private-sector management with government leadership.

Throughout the winter quarter, he will lead workshops focused on the realities of governing, pathways into government careers, and the skills needed to lead effectively in complex political environments, according to the news release.

He will also mentor students with an interest in city, county and state government roles.
