A Country in Distress
Homer Township, it is with deep sadness that I am writing to you today. Just hours ago, an assassination attempt was made on our 45th President and the current front runner for President, Donald J. Trump. I am also being told that innocent attendees were hurt, and one may have been killed. We pray for them and their families.
Weeks ago, I wrote to you about our country being in distress, and after today’s event, I still do believe that. In the past few years, I have seen things in our country that I thought I would never see in my life: police being attacked in the streets, statues being torn down in an effort to erase our country’s history, laws being changed and manipulated to go after political opponents, and the weaponization of our law-enforcement agencies to go after normal, everyday Americans expressing their First Amendment right.

We are, without a doubt, in a polarizing time in our country. No matter which side of the political aisle you’re on, violence can never be the answer. Despite any political differences we might have with each other, we need to come together as a community and not allow this violence to rear its ugly head here where we live. If you have differences with family, friends, or neighbors, settle them, and if you can’t come to an agreement, then agree to disagree peacefully.
During my campaign, my slogan has always been “Fix where you live.” It’s not that I ever felt that our community was completely broken, but sometimes things do need repair. I’m asking that we work together as a community to repair our differences to the best of our ability and love one another.
