Homer Glen Teen Looted Unlocked Cars in New Lenox: Cops

The teen stole a laptop equipped with a tracking device from one of the cars, and the cops used it to locate him, police said.

A Homer Glen teen looted at least half a dozen cars left unlocked in New Lenox, police said.

Jacob Roede, 19, was taken into custody overnight Tuesday.

Officers sent to Molly Court to investigate a car burglary learned a laptop equipped with a tracking device had been stolen.

“Investigators used the tracking device to locate the laptop,” police said. “The tracking showed the laptop was moving and the investigators determined the device was in a vehicle and conducted a stop.”

After pulling Roede over, the investigators were “able to send an alert to the laptop which the (they) could hear coming from inside the vehicle,” police said.

After arresting Roede, the investigators reportedly found property stolen from other vehicles.

According to the police, more than 95 percent of vehicle burglars involve an unlocked car. The police urge residents to lock their parked cars to discourage opportunistic thieves.
