Embattled Dolton Mayor Vetoes Investigation Of Herself

"The grown-up thing would be for her to just resign, just get out of here, leave town. But she's not going to do that," one trustee said.

DOLTON, IL — Dolton’s embattled mayor on Monday vetoed a resolution calling for an investigation into her spending, according to media reports.

Mayor Tiffany Henyard is accused of using municipal dollars for her personal expenses while the village’s unpaid bills pile up, WLS reported, but the mayor claims the allegations are false.

"It's facts over fiction for me. I will state facts. I will show receipts, and I will make sure our community is back together as one," she said, according to WLS. "It amazes me how people can get together and come to a board meeting and just have hate in their heart and not love on each other.”

Henyard has acknowledged a $2 million deficit, WGN reported, but Trustee Brittney Norwood said the number is closer to $7 million, according to NBC 5 Chicago.

“You lied to us as residents. You do not, you do not stand for me. And I want you to step down as mayor today and save our village from this deficit you have caused,” resident Vivian Allen said at Monday’s meeting, WGN reported.

Trustees in February passed a resolution requiring Henyard to hand over village financial records and calling for an FBI investigation, WGN reported. Henyard was not at that meeting, according to NBC 5 Chicago.

"The grown-up thing would be for her to just resign, just get out of here, leave town. But she's not going to do that,” Trustee Tammy Brown said, according to FOX 32. “You have disgraced this entire village and also disrespected each and every one of us.”

The board plans to override Henyard’s veto next month, WGN reported.

“To my staff, I apologize for all the mess that the board of trustees have created,” Henyard said Monday, according to WGN.

The FBI is questioning people as part of a probe into Henyard, FOX 32 confirmed.
