Homewood Launches Citizen Civics Academy, Insight Into Operations

HOMEWOOD, IL — The Village of Homewood launched an exciting and informative Citizen Civics Academy program for Homewood residents and business owners on January 2.

The six-week initiative is designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the various facets of municipal operations. Classes will occur every Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. from March 13 through April 17. Applications will be accepted until Feb. 21, or until the maximum number of participants is reached.

The Citizen Civics Academy program aims to enlighten and educate a maximum of 15 participants each week, taking them on a comprehensive journey through various Village departments. Each session will focus on a specific department, offering an extensive overview of their functions, responsibilities, and roles within the community.

“We are very excited about the Citizen Civics Academy program and hope residents find the sessions to be valuable,” said Communications and Engagement Specialist Antonia Steinmiller. “We encourage residents and Homewood business owners to join us once a week and learn about what we do on a daily basis and to hopefully enhance their perspective and knowledge of how local government works. Additionally, residents will be able to engage with staff, ask questions and tour facilities.”

The program's structure involves not only classroom-style sessions, but also hands-on experiences including facility tours and learning about various equipment used to provide Village services. Participants can expect to delve into the specifics of departments such as the manager’s office, public works, community development, and public safety. By the end of the six weeks, attendees will have gained valuable insights and a better understanding of local government and Homewood’s various departments.
