Homewood Prepares for Heavy Snowfall, Offers Tips for Residents

Winter Weather Advisory: Snow could amount to 4 to 8 inches

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in effect for Thursday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. until Friday, Jan. 13, 9 a.m. The following information was received from the National Weather Service:

Snowfall accumulation is expected to reach 4 to 8 inches. Winds will increase to 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 35 miles per hour by afternoon, resulting in blowing and drifting snow. Wind chills could drop to 10 below zero by Friday morning.

Accumulating snow and reduced visibilities will likely make travel difficult for today's afternoon commute. Travel conditions becoming dangerous in open areas.

Helpful information from Homewood Department of Public Works:

Snow removal priorities:

  • Main Streets: Governors Hwy, Dixie Hwy, Kedzie Ave, Harwood Ave, Ridge Rd, Riegel Rd, Holbrook Rd, 175th St, 183rd St, 187th St.
  • Secondary Streets: streets which have less traffic than the mains and consists of mostly residential areas and some commercial areas
  • Cul-de-sacs, Alleys & Dead Ends: streets which have the least amount of traffic

Keep Fire Hydrants Visible: Village personnel will monitor fire hydrants to make sure they are not hidden by snow. Residents are encouraged not to stack snow around fire hydrants and to assist in snow-clearing effort to help ensure fire safety. 

Keep streets cleared for plows. Cars cannot be parked on the streets during and for a period after snowfall of one or more inches, until streets have been plowed. Violation of this ordinance will result in ticket and possible towing of the vehicle.
