Homewood Launches Community Emergency Response Team Program

CERT trains residents in disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations and team organization.

HOMEWOOD, IL — The Village of Homewood has launched a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, a nationally recognized initiative designed to train residents to assist families, neighbors and the Homewood community during severe emergencies and disasters. The program begins Jan. 26, 2026 at the Village of Homewood’s Village Hall from 6 to 9 p.m. The program is eight weeks and concludes on March 28 with a full-scale disaster simulation.

The CERT program, developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), educates volunteers in basic disaster response skills such as disaster preparedness, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster medical operations and team organization. When emergencies overwhelm or delay professional responders, CERT-trained residents can provide critical assistance until help arrives.

“This CERT training is another way to engage residents," said Village Manager Napoleon Haney. "Training that is specifically geared to ensure that Homewood is better prepared for most types of disaster. I’m optimistic that residents will take advantage of this amazing program.

"This program is about preparedness, resilience and building a safer, more connected community.”

CERT training is provided at no cost to Homewood residents and combines classroom instruction with hands-on exercises. In addition to disaster response, the skills learned through CERT are valuable for everyday emergencies, severe weather events and community preparedness efforts. CERT members also have opportunities to participate in refresher trainings, exercises and community events throughout the year.

The Homewood CERT program will be coordinated in partnership with the Village’s public safety departments and emergency management partners. Classes will be taught by Cook County Emergency Management Planning and Preparedness Manager Phillip Mason. Residents who complete the training become an important extension of Homewood’s emergency response capability. Registration will close on January 9 or when registration is at capacity.

The Village encourages residents who are interested in emergency preparedness, community service and supporting their neighbors to consider joining CERT using an online form.
