Humane Society At Capacity, In Crisis: Foster Homes Needed For Dogs

June is Foster a Pet month, and at South Suburban Humane Society, there are plenty in need of a soft place to snuggle up.

Maggie is 8 years old, and was surrendered due to severe skin allergies. She is currently recovering from a skin infection. Cannot go to a home with other pets, which makes her incredibly difficult to place.

HOMEWOOD, IL — A south suburban humane society finds itself overflowing with dogs, and in desperate need of foster homes.

South Suburban Humane Society—with locations in Homewood and Matteson—said it is experiencing extreme numbers of animals in its care, and is pleading for help from anyone able to foster, volunteer, or donate.

"We are currently in a crisis situation and are completely at/over capacity," said Julia Bowling, director of foster programs for the society.

"We need to get dogs out as soon as we can, adoption or foster care."

The society is "at record-breaking numbers in terms of animals in our care, being a total of 650 as of this morning.

"If people are unable to foster, they can inquire about Dog's Day Out, Sleepover program, donate or just share our social posts and spread the word as much as they can," Bowling told Patch.

Bowling previously told Patch that the humane society's foster program is "very easy-going.

"Our goal is to educate foster parents and help get everyone into foster care!" she told Patch. "We supply everything, and cover all medical expenses for foster pets under the shelter.

"The only job of the foster parent is to just provide love and support, and sometimes training in the home."

The length of fostering can vary, Bowling said.

"... It all depends on the case they take in," she said. "Foster parents get to choose the dog they take in from the options we give to them."

Anyone interested in fostering can email Bowling at foster@southsuburbanhumane.org, or text (708)956-2959. They are also in need of kitten fosters, Bowling said.
