PARK FOREST, IL — A juvenile was arrested over the weekend after police found him with an illegal handgun converted into a machine gun at a park Saturday afternoon.

Park Forest police on a foot patrol of a park in the 400 block of Lakewood Boulevard at 4 p.m. July 27 encountered a juvenile "wearing blue latex surgical gloves, a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants, and a black balaclava style face mask on his head," police said on social media.

"At the time, it was 83 degrees and sunny."

Police spoke with the juvenile, and found a loaded handgun in his crossbody bag, police said. The handgun had an extended ammunition magazine and an auto sear device, which converted the gun into a fully automatic weapon.

The juvenile was arrested and petitioned to juvenile court for unlawful use of a weapon, machine gun, police said.

"Throughout the summer months," police wrote, "Park Forest Officers will continue to conduct extra patrols of local parks to ensure the safety and security of parkgoers."
