Motion Tries, Fails To Allow Above-Ground Pools In Flossmoor: Board

Multiple neighbors tried to change a village code that did not allow above-ground pools in residential backyards, though many were opposed.

FLOSSMOOR, IL — Despite interest from some residents, the Flossmoor Village Board of Trustees voted not to make changes to an ordinance that would allow above-ground pools.

According to zoning officials, the amendment was proposed at a meeting May 2, but did not advance past the initial stage.

Over the past six weeks, residents have spoken at board meetings and gathered signatures in support of above-ground pools, which haven't been allowed within the village for almost a decade.

Mayor Michelle Nelson and the village board decided above-ground pools would not fit the charm and aesthetic of Flossmoor, though some neighbors argued potential residents would not be able to see into many homes' backyards anyway.

Another concern voiced by residents at the Monday meeting included ensuring the standing water inside above-ground pools was safe and not overflowing into neighbors' yards. While others argued the village should not be able to tell residents what they can do with their property, the motion did not advance.
