Sam's Club In Matteson To Close (VIDEO)
The final day for the Cicero Avenue location is not known, but the store was temporarily closed Thursday following the announcement.
MATTESON, IL — Two months after Target announced it would be the shuttering its Matteson store in February, the village found out Thursday it would be losing another big-box retailer this year. Sam's Club is closing its Matteson location as part of parent-company Walmart's plan to shut down as many as seven of its 19 Illinois warehouse stores. Other stores to be shuttered include locations in Naperville and Romeoville.
News of the closings came amid an announcement of a wage hike for Walmart employees as the retail giant raised its minimum wage to $11. Walmart/Sam's Club media relations staff did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Patch on Thursday,
Business Insider reports that seven Illinois stores will be closed. But Romeoville Mayor John Noak said Thursday that the village was told Sam's Club plans to shut down only five locations in the state.

Information about the Matteson location — including the store's final day — cannot be found on Sam's Club's website. A Google search for the store brings up a link identified as the page for the Matteson store on the Sam's Club site, but clicking the link Thursday afternoon revealed a page with this message: "Error loading club information, please try again."
Sam's Club stores at the following nearby locations are still open:
- Joliet (321 S. Larkin Ave.)
- Tinley Park (16100 Harlem Ave.)
- Evergreen Park (9400 S. Western Ave.)
In November, Target said it was closing 12 of its underperforming stores, including the Matteson location at 4647 Promenade Way, near the abandoned Lincoln Mall, which was shut down in 2014. Target's last day in Matteson will be Feb. 3.
The Illinois locations aren't the only ones on the chopping block. Sam's Clubs in other states reportedly closed without notice Wednesday and and Thursday, including locations in Houston and New Jersey.
While Sam's hasn't issued a list of store closings, the Arkansas-based chain did reply to a customer's question about the closing on Twitter, saying, "After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, we’ve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and we’re committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition."
