Joliet Man Beat Woman With Table Leg, Broomstick: Cops

The woman was hospitalized and the Joliet man jailed.

A Joliet man allegedly beat a woman with a table leg and broomstick after kicking and battering her for about an hour, police said.

The woman was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center while the man, 21-year-old Edward Gill, was arrested and transported to the Will County jail.

Officers were sent to Gill’s Oneida Street apartment about 11 a.m. Friday after a neighbor called and reported hearing a woman screaming for at least 10 minutes straight, police said.

When the officers got there, they saw a woman exit the apartment followed by a man, police said. As the officers looked on, the man, later identified as Gill, allegedly dragged the woman back into the apartment.

The officers heard loud banging coming from inside the apartment and saw the windows rattle, police said, and when they went upstairs saw Gill and the 25-year-old woman through the unit’s open door.

The woman bore large bruises and a cut above her right eye, police said, and she “hysterically” insisted she did not call the cops. The woman later reportedly told officers that she accused Gill of taking her prescription medication, and he responded by allegedly shoving her down and battering and kicking her for about an hour.

The woman said she managed to get up and out the door, according to police, but Gill caught her and brought her back inside. That was when he allegedly beat her with the table leg and the broomstick.

Gill was charged with domestic battery and felony aggravated battery.
