Tuesday, October 1, 2024 - On Thursday, Nicor Gas hosted a grocery and resource fair at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in Joliet. 300 families received 4,210 pounds of fresh produce and frozen food items – enough to feed a family of four for an entire week! Children in attendance also had an opportunity to see utility trucks up close. Attendees also had the opportunity to speak with billing specialists from the company about energy assistance programs and budget bill options, free energy efficiency programs for renters and homeowners and sign up for free home energy assessments. Each attendee also received their choice of a complimentary weatherization kit that included items such as weatherstripping and door sweeps, or a complimentary water-savings kit that included low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. This year, Nicor Gas is also partnering with the Illinois Tollway to assist families in need of paying their I-PASS fees, as well as The Salvation Army to connect individuals with community action agencies at each grocery and resource fair event.

Nicor Gas hosts more than 100 free produce stands and grocery and resource fairs across its service territory every year with events coming up in the coming weeks in Cicero, Elgin and Calumet Park.
In Illinois, nearly 1.5 million people live in poverty – more than 12% of the state's population. Many of these families struggle to receive and maintain the most basic of essentials including heat in their homes in the winter, food, housing and medical assistance. At Nicor Gas, our team is committed to serving our 2.3 million customers across more than 650 communities with the resources they need to thrive. This year, the company expects to provide nearly 4,500 families across its service territory with free food and access to basic need resources at its produce stands and grocery resource fair events. In addition to food and basic resources, the Nicor Gas Community Connection Center (C3) team is always on site to provide attendees with a variety of support services related to housing, food insecurity, and federal funding opportunities, along with energy efficiency, bill pay, and other essentials.
