JOLIET, IL — Demetrius Greene, a notorious Joliet criminal who ended the life of 56-year-old Martyn Flowers, a long-time substitute teacher for Joliet Public School District 86, has finished serving his prison sentence and is back causing problems around Joliet, arrest reports show.

Joliet Patch has produced a number of crime stories on Greene over the years including one in 2019 when Greene, then 34, was given an eight-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to reckless homicide and failure to report an accident involving injury or death.

Around dinner time, on Jan. 10, 2018, Greene blew a red light at the busy intersection of Black Road and Larkin Avenue as he was driving the wrong way against traffic. Greene caused a six-vehicle pileup and the death of one of the motorists he struck, long-time Joliet Public School District 86 substitute teacher Martyn Flowers, 56.

So far this month, Joliet police have arrested Greene two different times. He was kept in the Will County Jail from Nov. 16-21 on a temporary police hold for Greene County, Illinois, but one of Will County's judges later ordered his release.

Then, two days later, Joliet police arrested him again, this time at the Stang Kelly Wine & Liquors store, 712 West Jefferson Street, on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing a police officer.

According to police spokesman Dwayne English, at 10:59 a.m. this past Sunday, the officers responded to Stang Kelly Liquor for a disturbance. At the scene, the officers learned that Greene entered the store and was placing a bottle of alcohol in his pants.

English noted that Greene was stopped by an employee who requested the bottle be given back. Greene then became upset and eventually gave the bottle back. Before leaving the store, Greene allegedly exposed his genitalia to the male employee, the arrest report showed.

An officer located Greene outside the store nearby and placed him into custody following a brief struggle in which Greene attempted to run from the officer, English indicated.

Greene was processed at Joliet's Police Department and released on a notice to appear at Will County's Courthouse.

Back in 2019, Joliet Patch published a story on Greene being sentenced to prison for his wrong way crash on Larkin Avenue that killed the 56-year-old Joliet teacher from District 86.

That June, Patch reported how Greene was adjusting to his new surroundings within the Illinois Department of Corrections penal system. He was assigned to downstate's Centralia Correctional Center. His projected release date was listed as Jan. 16, 2026, and he had a projected parole date of Jan. 14, 2022.

"Defendant was speeding the wrong way and ran a red light," court documents from the Will County State's Attorney's Office showed. "He crashed into the car being driven by Martyn Flowers. Defendant then left the scene of the accident and came to police six days later. Martyn Flowers passed away from the injuries."

In 2019, Joliet Patch noted that Greene previously served out a three-year prison term for aggravated domestic battery, and he had other convictions for multiple misdemeanors and traffic violations, the court documents show.

Greene comes from the 700 block of Joliet's Chase Avenue.
