Cop 'Accidentally' Fired Gun, Striking 2 Other Officers: Police

During a struggle with a person wanted in connection with a homicide, the officer's gun accidentally discharged, hitting two other officers.

LYONS, IL — Two Chicago officers were wounded when a third officer's gun accidentally discharged during a struggle with a suspect, police said.

Officers spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a homicide in a nearby suburb in the 1200 block of Lake Shore Drive around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. Police followed the vehicle to a gas station in the 8000 block of West Ogden Avenue in Lyons, according to officials.

When officers attempted to take an occupant of the vehicle into custody, a struggle ensued, police said.

Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said during that struggle, one officer accidentally fired their gun, "lightly striking" two other officers, the Chicago Tribune reported. A single bullet went through one officer's arm and into the other officer's shoulder, according to the report.

The pair was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, according to CPD spokesman Tom Ahern. Their injuries were non-life-threatening.

Ahern said two people were taken into custody following the incident and a gun was recovered.
