Driver Who Hit Building Said She'd Only Had Wine: Police

The driver reportedly asked a clerk inside the building not to call police.

Riverside, IL - A woman who drove over a parking bumper and ran into a building with her car May 31 told police she wasn't intoxicated; she'd only been drinking wine.

Diana M. Giard, 52 of the 0-100 block of Pine Avenue in Riverside, had a 0.114 blood alcohol content, according to Riverside police, who were called to the crash around 11:14 p.m. in the 3300 block of South Harlem Avenue.

A clerk in the building told police Giard walked inside and started an argument. The clerk said Giard wanted to leave, but her car was stuck on the parking bumper. The clerk said Giard asked her not to call the police.

Giard also argued with police, according to the report. She said she wasn't drunk, and she wanted to leave. Giard failed all six DUI sobriety tests performed at the scene, police reported.

A portable breath test unit showed Giard was over the legal limit, and she was arrested.

At the Riverside police station, Giard refused to blow into the Breathalyzer, and she refused to submit to a blood and urine test, police reported.

She told police her brakes failed, causing her to hit the building. But police tested the car at the scene and found the brakes worked.

Riverside Fire and Building departments determined the building was safe and the business could remain open.

Giard was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving too fast for conditions.
