Helicopter Crew Chief’s Heroism Still Echoes Decades After Vietnam
James Kramer of LaGrange Highlands earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for valor.

LaGrange Highlands, IL — Illinois has a storied tradition of military service, with countless individuals dedicating their lives to protecting our nation. While words can't fully capture the immense gratitude we feel for our servicemen and women, Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to highlight a few remarkable veterans and active-duty military members from our state.

Army SP5 rank. Jim logged 3200 flying hours in Vietnam from 1970-1971 as a crew chief on a helicopter earning both the Purple Heart and Bronze Medal for valor for rescuing the crew of another downed helicopter while taking heavy gunfire
Tell us about the military hero and what your community should know about them.
Jim is very humble about his military service and, like many combat veterans, shares very little about what he experienced in Vietnam. Since these vets were denied their due homecoming, even now, 50+ years later, ceremonies honoring their service still evoke a profound emotional response.
