La Grange Area To Hear SAFE-T Act Views
Riverside's former police chief and the Cook County public defender are set to speak.
BROOKFIELD, IL – Two speakers will discuss in Brookfield the pros and cons of the state's SAFE-T Act, a law that took effect in September that eliminates cash bail.
The League of Women Voters of the La Grange Area is set to host former Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel and Cook County Public Defender Sharone Mitchell.
The event is set for 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 18 at Brookfield Public Library, 3541 Park Ave.

The most controversial part of the SAFE-T Act is the elimination of cash bail.
The act also includes changes in the electronic monitoring program, more detention for domestic battery suspects, and diversion programs for those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse.
