LA GRANGE PARK, IL – Greater La Grange YMCA's parent organization has issued a statement on its decision to close the local center this summer.

In a statement late Friday, Brandon Austin, a spokesman for YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago, called the decision "difficult" but "strategic."

The last day is July 18. Patch reported on the planned shutdown earlier Friday.

"This decision comes after a thorough and thoughtful evaluation of our operations, long-term sustainability, and how we can best serve the evolving needs of our communities," Austin said. "While we recognize the important role the Greater LaGrange YMCA has played in the lives of many, this move allows us to refocus resources and strengthen our broader regional impact."

He said the organization's commitment to the area is unwavering, which involves working closely with staff and members to ensure a smooth transition.

That includes offering complimentary membership access at nearby YMCAs such as those in Downers Grove and Elmhurst throughout July, Austin said.

"Additionally, we are actively exploring future opportunities to grow and reimagine our presence in the greater La Grange area," Austin said.

As of Tuesday morning, 260 people have signed a Change.org petition to save the local YMCA.

The YMCA opened in La Grange in 1948 after local businessmen went door to door collecting money to help build it.

In 2007, the organization moved to a storefront on 31st Street in La Grange Park.
