LA GRANGE, IL – Russell Davenport, La Grange's assistant public works director, is retiring after 37 years with the village government.

In 1988, he started as a laborer and general utility worker.

He is also known for appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 1990 and 2009, a history that was noted when the village marked Davenport's 35th year.

Trustee Shawana McGee said Davenport had been her neighbor for more than three decades. They've taken part in block parties and community events together, she said.

"I listen to all the residents as they talk about your customer service and your diligence in fixing problems for us," she said. "You have some big shoes that have to be filled."

Trustee Glenn Thompson said he remembered meeting Davenport in 1991 when he had a water and sewer issue in his front yard.

Thompson described himself as panicked, with plumbing bills running in the tens of thousands.

"You were very calm and kept everything under control," Thompson said. "The contributions that you have made behind the scenes in the village have been so numerous and so valuable."

Davenport told the board that he had enjoyed his 37 years with the village. He praised the work of public works employees.

Then he looked at his family and said his work had caused "inconvenience" for them.

"I'm going to be here for you guys now," he said.
