LA GRANGE, IL – The new cafeteria at Lyons Township High School's South Campus is set to open this week.

Students will start using it Thursday, with staff getting a sneak preview a day earlier, Superintendent Brian Waterman said at Monday's school board meeting.

A couple of years ago, the school sought local feedback on what residents would like to see at the school's two campuses. Students complained about the long lines at lunch.

As part of the $33 million project, the school built an addition to house the cafeteria and moved the music department to the old cafeteria space, which was renovated. (Students began using the new music space during percussion auditions on Aug. 1.)

The new cafeteria was built with the idea of moving lines a lot more quickly at lunch, officials said.

The work took 19 months, Waterman said. It was part of a larger $46 million plan to improve the campuses, he said.

"The last leg of that will happen next summer with additional air conditioning work here at North Campus," the superintendent said.

An open house for the cafeteria and music wing is set for 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 2.
