Mom Talk: The Chocolate Milk Debate

The place where moms talk.

Today on Mom Talk were diving into the great chocolate milk debate.

A number of states and cities have been considering banning chocolate milk from school cafeterias. One side says that chocolate milk is unhealthy and is, more or less, soda in disguise. The other says it's the only way to get kids to drink milk, and in moderation, milk is good for growing kids.

My brother is certainly on the second side of the debate.

"I think that it's insane," he told me when I asked his opinion.

I too have a hard time imagining schools without chocolate milk. I certainly never chose plain milk when given the option in the milk line at Ogden Avenue School.

However, now older and much less of milk drinker, I can see where the "health nut" side has a good point. Chocolate milk is full of sugar, often made from high fructose corn syrup. With childhood obesity in America a growing concern, is it better to cut the options down now and save our kids a possible battle with diabetes and obesity?
