Moms Talk: Do We Still Need to Teach Cursive?

Linda Grush, one of the parents in our Moms Council, posted a very interesting article on Sept. 17, titled,

In the article, Grush wonders if cursive is on the way out, in order to make room for classes that teach keyboarding skills. It presents an interesting situation that relates to some of our recent discussions, including our last Moms Talk topic,

Today, let's bring the topic to our group of parents and to our readers: is teaching cursive still important?

To expand a little, what are other subjects in school that have been replaced due to a focus on the technological world? Are there lessons you think kids could do without, in place of something else?

Since we have spell check, should we focus less on spelling lessons? Many students now use calculators in math class too, but we still teach the foundations of adding and subtracting.
