Willow Springs, IL — From their time in uniform to their everyday contributions in our neighborhoods, veterans embody service in so many forms. Patch and T-Mobile have teamed up to share stories of veterans making a difference in the places we call home.

This story was submitted by Marilyn Vorsanger, who nominated Guy Vorsanger of Willow Springs, a U.S. Navy veteran who served from 1962 to 1967 before spending two additional years in the reserves. He finished his service with the rank of E-5, Quartermaster Second Class Petty Officer.

Tell us about the veteran's service.

Guy joined the Navy right out of high school. He had an uncle that was in the Navy and was a hero to Guy, inspiring him to join the Navy. He knew he wanted to serve his country and see the world. He really enjoyed the overseas tours, especially swimming in the Mediterranean after jumping off the aircraft carrier he was stationed on.

Guy has volunteered his services to the American Legion in LaGrange, the VFW in Western Springs, and volunteers for the Honor Flights that visit our nation’s capital. He also drives the veterans to their medical appointments on a weekly basis, usually starting at 5 in the morning. He has been seen carrying the American or Navy flag in the LaGrange Pet Parade and the St. Cletus 4th of July celebrations for at least 15 years.

He has held positions as Sergeant at Arms and Treasurer. Every Memorial Day, he has placed crosses in local cemeteries. He is also a regular cook for the pancake fundraisers. I don’t know of anyone who is more loyal and faithful to the veterans than Guy. He faithfully wears his Navy sweatshirts and hats and will always support the Armed Forces with their activities.

How do you know the veteran?

Guy is my husband, and I am so proud to help support his enthusiasm for his love of the veterans.

What makes the veteran someone your community should know about?

The community should be so supportive of our veterans and their contributions to the freedom that we experience because of dedicated veterans like Guy.

What three words best describe the veteran?

Dedicated, proud, and enthusiastic.
