Township of Lyons October Repair Event a Success
Event Brings together Volunteer "Repairers" to Fix Broken Items from Township Residents, to Help Them Save Money and Prevent Waste
The Township of Lyons hosted its first ever Repair Café on October 21. Volunteers from throughout the Township used their skills to assist residents in repairing a variety of items and fix everything from a pajama top to a hedge trimmer! The idea for bringing a Repair Café event to the Township of Lyons offices started when the township Clerk, Elyse Hoffenberg, attended a Go Green La Grange meeting. Go Green was knowledgeable about Repair Café, which is an international non-profit that encourages everyone to try and fix their household items to avoid more things ending up in landfills. The Go Green La Grange group had hoped that a local organization, with conference room space, might be open to hosting and coordinating the service.
Over this past summer, high school and college interns from The Township of Lyons planned for two Repair Café events that would bring together “handy” volunteers to help township residents fix various items. They reached out to local community members with surveys and posters. Repairers included: three sewers; one jewelry repairperson; and four mechanically inclined volunteers.
Items fixed included:
