DARIEN, IL – A La Grange man apparently had a reason why he slashed tires last week at a particular house in Darien, police said.

The 23-year-old man, who lives in the 800 block of Country Club Drive, faces three counts of criminal property damage in the 400 block of Maple Lane in Darien, police said.

Patch obtained the police report through a public records request.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, the man slashed the tires of three cars, according to the report.

When the crime happened, three people were in the garage with the door closed – his 23-year-old ex-girlfriend, a 24-year-old man and a 22-year-old man, police said.

They said they heard a hissing sound followed by a car door slam. They left the garage and saw the 23-year-old suspect's car heading west, police said. They called 911.

A few minutes later, a Darien officer responding to the call saw a car matching the victims' description speeding 45 mph in a 40 mph zone heading east on Plainfield Road. The officer pulled the car over in the Ulta parking lot in Willowbrook.

The man told the officer he was coming from a friend's house in Burr Ridge, but that did not make sense because he was headed toward Burr Ridge, police said.

During the stop, the officer described the 23-year-old as nervous and visibly sweating. The officer reported noticing the man toss a pocketknife onto the driver's seat as he exited the car.

The man's ex-girlfriend told police that she had recently broken up with him and that they had ongoing issues.

A few weeks ago, the man slashed her tires at her parents' house in Willowbrook, resulting in his arrest, police said.

In 2023, the man's firearm owner's identification card was revoked because he was seen as a "clear and present danger," police said.

Police drove the man to his grandparents' house in La Grange. Afterward, one of the male victims told police that the 23-year-old had just called and stated, "You're dead," according to the report.

The victim said he would seek a no-stalking order against the suspect.
