Sheriff's Deputy Saves Life Of Motorcyclist After Green Oaks Crash

A Skokie man was critically injured after a Gurnee woman failed to yield on a left turn while behind the wheel of a van, authorities said.

GREEN OAKS, IL — A Lake County sheriff's deputy saved the life of a motorcyclist who had been struck by a van Saturday in Green Oaks, authorities said.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Saturday, deputies were dispatched to a report of a crash at the intersection of Route 176 and Bayonne Avenue, just west of the intersection of Rockland and Waukegan roads, according to the sheriff's office.

They found a Ford Transit van had collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle, critically injuring its rider.

The 55-year-old Skokie man who had been riding the motorcycle had suffered a major leg wound and was bleeding significantly, officials said.

Deputy Dwight Arrowood used a tourniquet on the Skokie man's leg and stopped the bleeding, which saved his life, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators from the technical crash investigations team at the sheriff's office believe that the 58-year-old Gurnee woman who was driving the Ford van had been trying to make a left turn from an eastbound lanes of Route 176 onto Bayonne Avenue — right into the path of the oncoming Harley.

According to the sheriff's office, the Harley struck the Ford, throwing the motorcyclist from the bike. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment.

The Gurnee woman and her 26-year-old passenger were not injured in the crash, according to the sheriff's office.

No information was immediately available regarding any citations issued in connection with the incident.
