1 Student In Custody After 2 Consecutive Lockdowns At High School

Police said students alerted a high school staff member of violent, threatening posts another student had made on social media.

LAKE ZURICH, IL β€” Lake Zurich High School went into a hard lockdown Wednesday afternoon after administrators were made aware of violent threats posted by a student on social media, police said.

The lockdown was also imposed at the nearby May Whitney Elementary School. After a sweep of the building revealed no immediate danger, authorities said they took the student who made the threat into custody.

Administrators had put the school on a soft lockdown earlier in the day after finding a bullet shell casing on campus. Officials for the school district said police searched the area and did not find any weapons on school grounds. The hard lockdown was put in place almost immediately after the soft lockdown was lifted.

"The prompt response in calling these lockdowns at the high school was made possible by students who acted appropriately by promptly reporting information to a high school staff member, and by staff members following emergency protocols," Lake Zurich police said in a media statement following the incident.

The hard lockdown was lifted at around 2:40 p.m. Students were dismissed at the end of the day
