D113A Names New Principal For Old Quarry Middle School
Kristen Salwierak will take over the position in July; she currently serves as assistant principal at OQMS.

LEMONT, IL – Lemont-Bromberek School District 113A has announced that Kristen Salwierak has been named the next Principal of Old Quarry Middle School, effective July 1, 2026. She will succeed Dr. Joe Sweeney, who will transition to a District Office leadership role next year, the District said.
Salwierak, who currently serves as the Assistant Principal at Old Quarry Middle School, brings 19 years of experience in education, including 9 years as an Assistant Principal, and "a deep commitment to student success, instructional excellence, and a strong collaborative spirit that aligns with the District’s mission and values," the District said.
The selection process for the next OQMS principal included three rounds of interviews with administrators, parents and staff, as well as four separate performance tasks designed to assess leadership skills, communication and decision-making. More than 20 staff members and a parent panel participated in interviewing the three finalists, providing diverse perspectives and valuable feedback throughout the process, the District said.

“The process was intentionally rigorous because this is such a critical position for our district,” said Dr. Courtney Orzel, Superintendent of Schools. “Kristen consistently rose to the top at every stage. She is a student-centered, relationship-driven leader who understands the heart of Old Quarry, values the voices of staff and families, and has the vision to lead OQMS into its next great chapter.”
The District said members of the interview committee shared similar sentiments, describing Kristen as “a leader who listens first, collaborates naturally, and brings out the best in others.” One committee member noted, “She demonstrated a clear understanding of our school culture and how to balance tradition with innovation.” Another said, “Her authenticity and energy made it clear she was the right choice for our students and staff.”

Salwierak expressed excitement for the opportunity to lead Old Quarry Middle School.
“It is an incredible honor to serve this school and community that I care so deeply about. I look forward to continuing to build on the strong foundation that Dr. Sweeney and the OQMS staff have established and to working with our amazing students, staff, and families to make Old Quarry an even better place to learn and grow," she said.
Sweeney will work closely with Salwierak throughout the spring of 2026 to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.
“Old Quarry has a long tradition of excellence, and we are confident that Kristen will carry that legacy forward with passion, purpose and pride,” said Orzel.
