SS. Cyril and Methodius Closes Early Due to 'Strong Gas Smell'

The school contacted parents around 9:30 a.m. about the emergency closing, even though firefighters have already deemed the building safe, according to school officials.

Parents were notified around 9:30 a.m. of the emergency closing, and were asked to pick up their children.

According to an email from Administrator Shirley Tkachuk, a strong gas odor was noticed in the computer lab Wednesday morning. The Lemont Fire Protection District, the gas company, and heating and cooling company were all notified immediately.

"We have been told the building is safe, but we do feel it's best to dismiss our sudents while the repairs are being done," Tkachuk stated.

As of 11 a.m., all religious education classes scheduled for Wednesday evening are still on, said Kim Zajec, an administrative assistant at SS. Cyril and Methodius.

If classes are canceled, parents will be notified via email by 3 p.m., Zajec said.

The school expects to re-open Thursday.
