Live Wires Fall Onto Vehicle In Rollover Crash In Zion

A driver was flown to the hospital by helicopter after a rollover crash left live wires on top of his vehicle Tuesday in Zion, fire officials said.

The Zion Fire and Rescue Department responded around 2:26 p.m. Tuesday to the intersection of 21st Street and Edina Boulevard for a vehicle crash.

Zion Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Eric Troy said a sedan struck a light pole, causing the pole to come down and a wire to drape across the roof of the vehicle.

Troy said that firefighters used a device that showed the wire was energized and ComEd was called to the scene.

Firefighters and paramedics were unable to get close to the vehicle due to the threatening electrical hazard.

The male driver was initially unable to communicate with first responders following the incident.

ComEd responded quickly to the scene and they were able to cut the power to the wire. Firefighters removed the victim out of the vehicle and into an ambulance.

A LifeNet medical helicopter landed at Christ Community Church in Zion and the ambulance transferred the victim to the helicopter.

The flight crew transported the man, who was conscious after being removed from the vehicle, to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troy said the helicopter was called to transport the victim out of an abundance of caution and no one else was inside the car.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash and it was not immediately known how it was caused. The Zion Police Department continues to investigate the incident.
