Lisle Shares Advice for Living Alongside Coyotes

The following is taken from the Village of Lisle website and comes courtesy of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County:

As the thick foliage begins to thin out during fall, residents may see increased sightings of coyotes. Coyotes prefer to be as far from humans as possible, but as with other species, a loss of habitat has left them few choices. To prevent problems in your yard, eliminate sources of food and shelter and follow these guidelines:

• Do not feed coyotes.
• Keep pet food and water dishes inside your home
• Do not allow spills to accumulate below bird feeders
• Keep grills and barbecues clean as even small food scraps attract coyotes
• Keep garbage bins inside or securely store outside bins  
• Do not add pet waste, meat, milk, or eggs to an exposed compost bin
• Pick up fruit that has fallen off trees
• Protect vegetable gardens with heavy-duty fences
• Clear all bushes and dense weeds near the home where coyotes may find shelter and small animals upon which to feed

While encounters with coyotes are rare, pet owners should always take a few precautions:

• Do not leave small pets outside unattended, especially at night
• Walk your dog on a leash
• Keep your yard well lit when outdoors with a pet at night
• Coyotes can be creatures of habit. If you encounter one at the same place and time while walking your pet, change your route or the time you walk
