Village: Evacuated People 'May Return When Safe,' Lists Precautions

The Village of Lisle is in the midst of handling one of the worst flood related disasters in its history. Currently, water levels in the river are dropping, flood waters are receding, roads are reopening and DuPage County crews are pumping water out of heavily flooded areas.
Evacuated and displaced people can return to their homes as soon as it is safe to do so. If homes are blocked by standing flood water, residents are not allowed to return at this time. However, evacuated residents may return to their homes if no standing water blocks access to the residences. The list of closed roads should first be reviewed to determine if street access is allowed. Residents returning to their homes should follow the Village’s Flood Safety Guidelines and use common sense to prevent injuries. Precautions include:

- Do not walk or drive through flowing or standing water
- Stay away from power lines and electrical wires
- Keep children and pets away from detention basins, culverts, ditches and storm drains
- Have the power company turn off the electricity before re-entering the home
- Look before you step to avoid falling or being injured by flood debris
- Be alert for gas leaks and do not smoke or use candles, lanterns or open flames
- Look out for frightened animals or those that have been displaced by flood waters
- Clean everything that has been wet
- Do not use gas powered generators or charcoal fires indoors

Your information will help the Village assess the overall damage to the community and help Lisle qualify for state and federal financial assistance. It will also help you with your homeowner claims process. Residents are advised to contact their homeowner insurance agents regarding any claim for damages due to a flood or sewer backup. Your documentation, pictures and clean-up receipts will help support your individual insurance claims.
The Village of Lisle is doing everything within its power to seek state and federal assistance for flood related damage. However, this can be a lengthy process and no financial assistance is guaranteed.
