5 Manhattan Nonprofits To Support This Holiday Season

MANHATTAN, IL — If you’re like many of your Manhattan neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Manhattan area.

1. Hands, Hooves, and Hope Ranch (HHH): HHH Ranch seeks to improve the quality of life for animals and people. The ranch promotes communication skills, healing, building confidence and equality for all individuals through community outreach, education, and research. 2. The Jackson Lewis Memorial Foundation: Started in honor of Manhattan teen Jackson Lewis, who died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 15. The organization aims helping to raise awareness for and help combat suicide in kids 18 years and younger, for kids like Jackson who feel as though there is no other way to get help. 3. Manhattan Township Historical Society: The Manhattan Township Historical Society's Mission is to collect, preserve, organize and display items or artifacts that depict and reflect the lives, customs, activities and history of the businesses, residents and residences of the village and township of Manhattan. 4. Manhattan American Legion — Since 1949, the Manhattan American Legion, Post 935, has welcomed veterans from every branch of the armed forces. Members of the American Legion participate in several annual events, including Wreaths Across America and Poppy Day.
