MANHATTAN, IL — Anna Carmine said she had never grown a flower in her life before the idea for The Wildflower Farm came to her last summer. But an idea planted in an abundance of passion — and a ton of work — came sometimes bloom into something joyous the whole community can share in.

Such was the case when The Wildflower Farm, located at 11332 W. Dralle Road in Monee, opened up July 17. Carmine, a Mokena resident, said she really did not know what to expect opening weekend, but the turnout was beyond what she had dared to hope for. She said she would have been happy if just a few people showed up. More than a few did — to the tune of about 500 people.

“Actually seeing people this past weekend come out, it sounds silly, but I wanted to cry because you see them leaving with something I’ve grown," Carmine said.

A handmade pottery mug sells for $40, or a pitcher for $60. Purchases of the pottery gets a special offering of $5 off to refill either the mug or pitcher at future visits.

Whatever flowers fit inside the jar are included in the price. Only sunflowers and dahlias are sold by the stem.

If no jars or pottery are purchased, there is a $5 admission charge for anyone over the age of 2.

In addition to the U-pick flowers, The Wildflower Farm offers a range of entertainment for the whole family. There is a jumpy pillow for children, live music, a photo field dedicated for people to take photos among the flowers and princess characters available for photos with children. Future additions include a coffee shop, pastries, barrel rides for children, food trucks, date nights and girls night out events, Carmine said.

The Wildflower Farm will be open until the first frost, which normally occurs sometime in October.

Carmine said to be sure to check The Wildflower Farm’s Facebook page for up to date schedule of dates and times.
