Manhattan Jr. High Scholastic Bowl Team Wraps Historic Season As State Runner-up
The team's only post-season loss came in the State finals.

MANHATTAN, IL — Manhattan Jr. High has again notched one for the record books, school officials said this week.
For the first time in the school's Illinois Elementary School Association Scholastic Bowl history, its team advanced to Sectional and State-level competition, finishing as runner-up.
"Our regular season record was an impressive 8-2, and we carried that momentum into the post-season with an 8-1 record," said Coach Joyce Watson. "We swept through Regionals and Sectionals, falling only in the State Finals—our only post-season loss! ... a tremendous accomplishment that reflects the hard work, dedication, and teamwork of our students."

A highlight of the tournament, Watson added, was the team's tie-breaker victory over Hickory Creek. The teams met in the first round at State, winning 225-205 and avenging a regular season loss. The team also took on and defeated the MJHS teacher team in April, adding a fun and spirited win to their journey, Watson said.
"This incredible season wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support of our amazing group of parents and the many team members who came to cheer us on at State," she added.

Principal Vince Perillo applauded the team's season—and their character.
"While their accomplishments deserve praise, what we are most proud of these students and coaches for is who they are as representatives of MJHS," Perillo said. "Members of the Scholastic Bowl team are hardworking, dedicated, kind, inclusive, and fun. Throughout the season, they displayed sportsmanship, teamwork, and enthusiasm, a true example of what it means to have Demon Pride!"
Assistant Principal Gina Burlison also celebrated the team's success.
"The success of the Scholastic Bowl team truly belongs to the entire team," Burlison said. "These students and coaches have put in the time and effort, and they’ve made all of us at MJHS extremely proud.
"Not only are these students incredibly bright, but they also exemplify what it means to be a Manhattan Demon every day—kind, caring, respectful, and responsible. We can’t celebrate them enough!"
