Where To Stay Cool In Manhattan When Temps Are Dangerous
Temperatures are expected to climb above 100 degrees Tuesday and Wednesday in Manhattan. Here's where to go to cool down.
MANHATTAN, IL — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from noon Tuesday through 8 p.m. Wednesday in Manhattan, with temperatures forecasted to top 100 degrees.
The Village of Manhattan will offer the Manhattan Community Meeting Room at Village Hall, 260 Market Place, as a cooling center during normal business hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to Village staff.
Peak afternoon heat index values of 105 to 109 degrees are expected, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperatures combined with high humidity may cause heat-related illness.

Here are some tips from the National Weather Service for staying cool and safe during the excessive heat:
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Stay out of the sun.
- Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside.
- When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
- To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
