Work To Begin Soon On $550K Water Main, Sewer Project Along Rte. 52: Village

Construction is expected to begin later this month and continue through the fall, officials said Wednesday.

MANHATTAN, IL — Work will begin soon on a nearly $550,000 project to extend sewer line and water main along US Rte 52 in Manhattan, the Village said Wednesday.

Trustees recently awarded the project to the lowest responsible bidder, Spiess Construction, in the amount of $547,449.

The project includes the installation of a 12-inch ductile iron water main extending from Smith Road south, then west under US Route 52 to Gougar Road, as well as the extension of an 8-inch sanitary sewer from the Wauponsee Interceptor sewer within the Gougar Road right-of-way east to the intersection at US Route 52. These utility extensions will serve future development along the corridor and enhance the Village’s capacity to support long-term growth, officials said in a release.

The Village of Manhattan received a $300,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) through the office of Representative Anthony DeLuca to assist with project funding. The remaining costs will be recaptured through future development connections within the service area, the Village said.

Village officials emphasized that the project represents a "significant infrastructure investment designed to support future commercial development and enhance utility service within a key growth corridor. This strategic improvement will eliminate existing infrastructure limitations and create new opportunities for development along the US Route 52 corridor."

“This project is an important step forward for our community,” said Mayor Mike Adrieansen. “By improving our infrastructure, we’re making it easier for new businesses to come to Manhattan and helping create more opportunities for growth along the US Route 52 corridor.”

Construction is expected to begin later this month and is expected to continue through the fall.

The Village asks for the public’s patience as crews complete the work.
