NAPERVILLE, IL — An Aurora man faces attempted murder charges after police say he shot and robbed a woman in Naperville in late June.

Jarvelle Rainey, 21, of the 800 block of Oliver Avenue, was charged with attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery — discharge of a firearm and armed robbery with a firearm in connection with the June 23 incident.

Police were called to the 1000 block of Iroquois Avenue for a report that someone had been shot. When they got to the scene, they found a woman with a gunshot wound in her chest. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

According to police, Rainey and another person met the woman at Motel 6, 1585 Naperville-Wheaton Rd., and she got into their car. Rainey is accused of punching the woman and shooting her before stealing her backpack, cellphone and wallet.

Police say Rainey made the woman get out of the car before he drove off.

On June 28, a warrant was issued for Rainey's arrest. He was found at the Comfort Inn & Suites on Lincolnway in North Aurora on July 8 and taken into custody without incident.

“It is alleged that Mr. Rainey not only robbed an innocent, unarmed woman, but also shot her in the chest before forcing her out of the vehicle and fleeing the scene,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

Berlin added, “This type of senseless violence and complete disregard for human life will not be tolerated in DuPage County. Thankfully, the victim in this case did not sustain life-threatening injuries."

Rainey is set to be arraigned on Aug. 5.
