Letter to the Editor: Don't Let Scare Tactics Derail Smart Meter Program

Send your letter to the editor to maryl@patch.com.

I just picked up a flyer against the Naperville Electric Utility's Smart Meter installation program at a local retailer and I am appalled at the lies and distortions contained within it.  Obviously, the reasons for opposition given in the flyer make no sense. If we were worried about the electromagnetic waves, we would all have to give up our wireless phones, networks, garage door openers, remotes, etc. If we were worried about privacy, the danger there is from facebook, our smart phones, and all the data stored about us by companies.

So what is the real reason for opposition?   Is it that some group does not want utilities to even out their load and save money by allowing us to see and control when to use electricity? Smart metering is an economic winner, allowing utilities to make the best use of their installed capacity by charging less on off hours. Then consumers can save by choosing when to use electricity. This is a proven program that works around the world. Please do not allow the scare tactics of a few to derail it for Naperville.
