Man Sentenced To 12 Years For Drug-Induced Homicide In Naperville
A Chicago man convicted of drug-induced homicide in the 2022 death of a man from Naperville was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

NAPERVILLE, IL — A Chicago man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for drug-induced homicide in the 2022 death of a 23-year-old Naperville man. Shawn Smith, 33, who had pleaded guilty to the felony charge, was sentenced Tuesday.
Naperville police had been called to a home on Nov. 27, 2022, after the 23-year-old man was found dead. An investigation led officers to determine that Smith provided the man with the drugs that led to his death, a news release said. Toxicity reports found the man had heroin, fentanyl, trazodone and diphenhydramine in his system.
Police set up a time to buy drugs from Smith on Dec. 5, 2022, at which time they took him into custody.

“Judge Guerin’s twelve-year-sentence today sends a message of deterrence to any would-be drug dealers that if you supply illegal drugs that result in the death of another person, you will be arrested, charged and face a significant amount of time behind bars if found guilty,” Berlin said. “This young man’s tragic death is yet another stark reminder of the deadly consequences of illegal narcotics.
Smith must serve 75 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
