New Beginnings Hair Design has a New Look
A whole new shop design attracts an all-ages crowd.
Pamela Swallow, hair stylist and owner of New Beginnings Hair Design, took a bold step when she took over a 30-year-old established shop in 2009. But her confidence and market savvy have trimmed away the risk.
First, she worked for four years solely as a hair stylist at the shop, which is located at 346 W. Maple St. She got to know the community and the clientele. She was as attracted to them as they are to her expertise. So in 2009, the it seemed like a natural evolution of her career. She bought the shop from the previous owner, Amy Gerencir. Realistically, the two simply changed roles. Gerencir continues working at the shop as a stylist, after she sold the business.
The continuity of existing clientele together with the new faces that Swallow attracted is what gives the shop the perfect mix."We appeal to all ages," she said. Men, women and children come for the most up-to-date styles, while senior citizens enjoy the pampering, conversation and weekly wash and sets that they're used to.

The shop features four chairs. There's enough room to bring on a couple more stylists, said Swallow.

Having built a steady base of customers, Swallow wasn't satisfied to rest on her laurels. She invested in the community. The shop interior has been completely rejuvenated. She put in between $15,000 and $20,000 worth of improvements and decorative charm. Today the 29-year-old entrepreneur is entering a whole new phase.
"Now that it's the way I want it to be, New Beginnings Hair Design is ready to welcome a whole new crop of customers into her world."It's (a mix of) new faces and old faces with a new vibe," said the petite brunette.
In days gone by, the shop was quaint and friendly. It still is, she said, but it's entered a new phase. "We're a full service salon—super friendly and very accommodating."
Once you comb through the details of remodeling the shop, ordering the stock, bringing on more staff, Swallow said it comes down to keeping the clients happy. They're reaction when they walk through the doors is "wow."
"It's a pleasant surprise" for faithful clients and a comfortable atmosphere for newcomers. New Beginnings offers a full range of hair styling options beyond the standard cut, said Swallow. The shop has a team of talented stylists. The shop offers highlights, semi-permanent or permanent hair coloring, highlight/lowlight foils and perms along with "updos" for the bride and her bridesmaids. The shop also provides pedicures and a variety of waxing services.
