Suicide Prevention, Intervention Class Coming To New Lenox
The 1.5-hour class is set for Thursday, April 4, and is designed to give people tools to use in interactions with suicidal subjects.
NEW LENOX, IL — A class set for April 4 in New Lenox will equip participants with methods and approaches to help someone who is contemplating taking their own life.
The New Lenox Safe Community Coalition, in partnership with Sertoma Star Services, is offering a QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) class on Thursday, April 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Community Room at the New Lenox Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway. The class is free and is recommended for anyone high school age or above.
"This 1.5-hour class increases public awareness of suicide and improves one’s ability to identify and refer those at risk for suicide," organizers wrote of the event.

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer and is described as the CPR of mental health.
Participants learn about the impact of suicide in America, common myths and facts surrounding suicide, warning signs, risk factors and protective factors, according to the event's website. Participants are equipped to intervene early by learning how to question, persuade and refer persons who are at risk for taking their own life. Participants are identified as Gate Keepers upon completion of the training.
