The driver was waiting to pick up a passenger early Tuesday morning, police said.

NEW LENOX, IL — An Uber driver was struck in the head with a gun and his car stolen Tuesday morning as he waited to pick up a passenger in New Lenox, police said.

New Lenox police at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday were called to the 1600 block of Eagle Circle for an armed carjacking. An Uber driver awaiting a passenger was approached by two men in a white Hyundai Accent, police said. They threatened the man with a gun and demanded his vehicle before pulling him from his car, and striking him in the head with a gun, police said.

The suspects took the man's cell phone and wallet, police said.

Two men attempted to flee in the victim's car, a Toyota Venza. A third suspect, who was the driver of the Hyundai, never exited that vehicle. The two in the victim's car "had difficulty operating it," police said, and abandoned it nearby.

Police later learned that the white Hyundai that the three offenders drove to New Lenox in was stolen out of Chicago Sunday. The offenders fled the area in the stolen Hyundai.
