Niles and Morton Grove seeking cheaper water

Officials say Evanston could provide water at a lower rate than what Chicago currently charges

The Morton Grove Village Board of Trustees voted on November 28 to hire a lawyer to negotiate a water supply contract with Evanston, according to the Niles Herald-Spectator. Evanston, like Chicago, has its own plant to treat water from Lake Michigan.

Niles would also be included in the new water plan, and the Niles board is expected to consider the proposal soon. The two villages will split the cost of the contract negotiation.

Chicago currently supplies water to both villages, but rates have been increasing, officials say. Morton Grove pays Chicago $3.81 per 1,000 gallons, but water from Evanston would be cheaper.

One challenge will be making the required connections to the villagesโ€™ water systems. Both villages have pipes to take water from Chicago, but there is no connection to Evanston.

An engineering study to determine the best way to get Evanston water to the villages is expected to cost $600,000
