Referendum To Divide Niles Into 6 Districts On Nov. 5 Ballot
The voter approved referendum would split Niles into 6 separate districts with each district getting one trustee for representation
A Niles Referendum To Divide The Village Into Districts will be on the General Presidential Election on November 5.
The Proposed Referendum Would Divide Niles into 6 Separate Districts, with each district represented by one trustee, as opposed to the current setup with 6 trustees overseeing the entire village as a whole.
The Binding Question on the ballot is as such: "Shall the Village of Niles be divided into 6 districts with one Trustee elected from each district in accordance with Illinois Municipal Code (65 ILCS
5/3.1-25-75)?"

The Mayor of Niles, George Alpogianis is on record as opposing this referendum, and as such has sent out a letter to Niles residents outlining his concerns, rationale & opposition to the referendum. Among his concerns is that Niles will be turned into a system of government like that in Chicago. "Chicago-style" is the wording used, along with "mini-Chicago."
The mailing sent out in favor of the ballot measure is paid for by Niles Citizens for Responsible Government. The petition that got over 1047 signatures in order to be placed on the ballot was initiated by Joseph Makula, Robest Cieszukowski, Robert Zalesny & Carolyn Drbilk,
according to the Important Information mailer sent out by the Village to Niles residents.
