SUV Driver Fatally Strikes 85-Year-Old Pedestrian In Niles

The Niles resident was crossing Milwaukee Avenue when he was struck and killed Sunday morning, police said.

NILES, IL — A pedestrian was fatally struck by an SUV Sunday morning in Niles, authorities said.

Yalda Shabou, 85, was crossing Milwaukee Avenue from west to east around 8:30 a.m. when he was hit by a southbound Toyota RAV4 in the curb lane, according to Niles police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Police called in the major crash investigations unit of the north suburban task force closed down both Milwaukee Avenue and Maryland Street.

The Niles Fire Department was called to the scene and rushed Shabou to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 9 a.m.

No citations were issued to the driver of the Toyota, a 66-year-man from Northbrook, who remained at the scene after the crash.

According to police, surveillance footage showed the pedestrian had begun crossing Milwaukee Avenue against the traffic signal when he tripped into the curb lane, where he was struck by the driver as he passed through a green light at Church Street.
